The GCSE Exam consists of 6 papers (2 papers for each subject), each paper with given topics.

There can be different approaches for Science, but generally I follow the student’s school’s scheme of work, so communication and cooperation are the key. We cover the topics they are learning thoroughly, focusing on exam techniques and understanding and answering the questions correctly. I also set homework when I feel that the student would benefit from more practice or if requested.

Among the resources I provide to my students are topic checklists based on the particular specification which can provide a guide of the required knowledge. I often set exam questions to complete at home on the taught topics, and once a term set a full exam paper for the student to complete, usually during the holidays.

Once I have enough information on the topics taught at school, the planned topics and the student’s strengths and weaknesses (this could be either observed during the sessions, from the homework or school test results if provided), I produce a mid-term plan. This can initially take about 3-4 sessions with new students, assuming the communication is in place between the student, parent/carer and school.

For students not in full-time education, for example those taking GCSE re-sits, or those who require a bespoke course, this can also be catered for.

The GCSE Maths Exam consists of 3 Papers. Each paper is a mixture of topics from the large pool of potential topics, the composition of these papers is not provided in advance. Often a single question on a paper requires multiple maths skills to be solved.

I assess the student in relation to their exam tier (Higher or Foundation) we then focus on the areas of weakness while working alongside the current topic being covered at school as this ensures that key concepts are understood before moving on to more complex areas.

Homework is set after each session where applicable to offer extra practice and ensure the student feels confident in the subject – this is optional, but recommended. In addition, the student can complete a practice test paper termly or half-termly which I mark and provide a feedback on. Once I collect enough data on the student’s work, I produce a Progress check which is reviewed termly based on the students’ performance.

Assuming the students are in a full-time education and attend weekly tutoring sessions, the results show some improvement after 2-3 months.
